Personality: Envy tends to be the most stubborn, most easily irritable, and the biggest prat of all the Homunculi. More so than Wrath even. But there is one thing that Envy especially despises - any mention of the surname Elric and he flies into a rage. Like his name suggests, he is envious - envious of everybody, envious of all humans, but most of all he is jealous of Ed and Al, because they have everything he doesn't have and everything he will never have. At any chance he gets, he 'bullies' Edward, but can never get to kill him entirely because Edward is one of his Father's precious sacrifices. Many things seem to put Envy off, but it appears that Edward is the biggest reason for Envy to get angry. Nothing seems to get Envy happier than watching humans fight against each other when the true cause of their suffering is within their reach, and also, Envy enjoys attention. He loves boasting about his achievements: manifesting himself as a State Soldier, he shot and killed an innocent Ishvalan child, which was the spark to ignite the uprising which led to the Ishvar Massacre. Also, masquerading as Second Lieutenant Maria Ross, he murdered Roy Mustang’s best friend, Maes Hughes, framing Maria for something she entirely did not do. From time to time, he uses these precious memories psychologically to prod at his victims’ emotions, watching them writhe in mental agony.
Envy is violent by nature and will grab any opportunity to inflict harm on anyone, loving the sight of blood. Many a clash he has accidentally hit Edward on the metallic side, which hurts Envy, which is another little something that he dislikes.
“Pain is troublesome” was what Envy had said the first time Edward had tried attacking him – but right afterwards, he punched Edward.
Overall, you could say Envy is a pratty, violent, sadistic teenager who doesn’t act his age.
Background: Envy was the fourth of the Homunculi created by Father, and wields the power to transform into anyone and almost any living thing. Using his gift, Envy was the one who performed assassinations and infiltrations for the Homunculi. An even longer time back than the time Envy killed Maes Hughes, he had taken the form of a State Military soldier and shot an innocent Ishvalan child to death, sparking the ignition of the Ishvalan Uprising. The Homunculi with Envy were working to create Philosopher’s Stones by using multiple human sacrifices, and the Elric brothers who knew nothing about the Homunculi found out. Venturing into an abandoned research facility, they found that alchemical experiments were being conduced using human sacrifices from a conveniently nearby prison. Edward defeated the guard that had intended to stop him from learning more, but on the brink of death, the guard decided to let him know about the works of the Homunculi. Lust, “sister” of Envy, surged in and finished off the guard before he could give Edward any information, and as Envy and Lust bore down on Edward, they began to fight. Edward aimed for Envy, who was closest to him, but just then his mechanical arm failed because Winry had forgotten to add a screw in. Envy had been dodging his attacks smoothly for the moment, but when Edward hesitated because of the malfunction, Envy plunged his fist into Edward’s stomach, knocking him against the wall and moving up too close for comfort to disturb him with his words. Still, Envy was not allowed to kill him, and so, before he and Lust decided to blow up the place, brought Edward out, slung over his shoulder.
At some point after that, Maes Hughes found out about the government's evil little brewing plans, and hastened to call Mustang and inform him. However, Envy intercepted him just as Roy picked up the phone, and, morphing into Maria Ross, told him to let go of the receiver. Hughes was not tricked – he knew Maria Ross had a beauty spot on her cheek, though Envy hadn’t noticed and had left it out. Just as Hughes was ready for a fight, Envy used his wit and changed into Hughes’ wife, making it much harder for him to kill. With his hesitation, Envy murdered him instead.
After the arc of Ed and Al’s travels, Envy was yet again introduced into the storyline.
Mustang had murdered Lust and Gluttony, upon seeing him, charged at him, hating him for it. Ed, Al, and Lin helped Mustang escape by confronting Gluttony, but were ambushed by Envy, who enjoyed a brief tussle with the three before getting consumed by Gluttony in one of his worst rages.
However, because Gluttony was a alchemic imitation of The Gates, Envy fell through and came to find himself in another dimension entirely: Adstringendum.
Abilities/Additional Notes: Envy has the ability to shapeshift. 'Nuff said.
